Problems with Lead Acid
1. Very shallow charge and discharge cycle. 2. Less than 50% of the charge in the battery is usable (In 100AH only 50AH is usable). 3. Very less charge discharge lifecycle (e.g. 500). 4. Very clumsy and heavy. 5. Very costly to acquire and operate including maintenance. 6. Corrosive acid and fumes to handle. 7. Lead used in the battery is carcinogenic. 8. Monthly standalone of upto 5 - 20%.
Of all the solutions available currently in the world, Lithium chemistry the one which hold promise due to its high charge density capability or in other words capable of holding large amount of charge in a small space. PROBLEMS WITH LITHIUM CHEMISTRY: 1. Catches fire easily when exposed to air. 2. Catches fire when over discharging. 3. Catches fire when over charging Highly unstable. 4. Does not work at minus temperature regions. 5. Not suitable for hot tropical Indian Climate.
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo4)
There is another chemistry which is promising and safe for public use and that is the LiFePo4 battery. Below are the attributes which makes it a promising proposition. 1. Highly stable composition. 2. Does not catch fire. 3. Easily works at fairly low temperatures and higher ones, compared to pure lithium Ion battery. 4. Long time charge retention (3% per month discharge rate). 5. Light weight (Less than 1/4th that of Lead Acid). 6. High Charge density per kilogram.
